Also, I was playing normal and casual I believe. It was some mission that started me on a mountain with a couple party members split up and surrounded I think. Just got brutalized.
Yes, a split party can make stuff pretty challenging. Can't remember the exact map though, but did you have any flying units? These can be good for moving other units across mountains, since reuniting the party should be priority.
As general advice don't always push ahead. FE usually rewards turtling and backtracking, with only a few exceptions.
By the way Awakening
has an amazing rendition of Anna is a great entry point, so I'd totally recommend you to try again.
Yeah, I'm playing it on casual mode to hopefully avoid anything like that, not really interested in permadeath an
Yeah, the permadeath stuff is not for me.
The first few times I played classic but always hit reset when units died - I liked them too much - but;
- When you accept permadeath for what it is, the game becomes something so different. It's so thrilling and makes for a run unlike any other, making you value these lovely characters even more
and granting a good alibi to dispose of those you hate.
- Since Echoes the franchise introduced a mechanic to rewind turns. Although limited, it can encourage you to eventually play classic.
I forget if you saw the spec thread where Stan went on for pages about D&D. Wasn't that long ago, it was him letting off steam after being killed. Hilarious though. (<3 Stan)
I remember recently reading Stan referring to DnD with weird grammar (was he drunk?) for posts and posts. Unsure if it was something that happened a while ago and was just linked though.
And yes he's always a fun poster to read.

So you can form an united front and kill Swamped! You both distrust her. Please.
